Did you know that XL recordings made $67 million off Adele’s 21 album? That’s a whole lot of money, and as the old saying (probably) goes, getting a whole lot of money just makes a man want even more. However, it seems like XL isn’t banking on making any further withdrawals from the Adele ATM (AdeleTM?) anytime soon. XL revealed in a statement made to the New York Times that they’re taking the found-money approach to Adele’s mega-success, and in fact don’t expect another album from her for a little while. To quote:
The next Adele album may not come for some years, and it’s impossible to predict its likely sales. We therefore regard this year’s figures as exceptional.
Good strategy. It’s like when a basketball team unexpectedly wins 50 games one season, and everyone just assumes they’ll win more the next year because why would they win less? Doesn’t always work out like that—and hell, if Adele might not even be playing in a season for another few years, best to just divest yourself of expectations all together. (After all, “Skyfall” couldn’t even secure the UK #1…)
The good news for XL? If they are indeed nursing some latent heartbreak over Adele’s extended sabbatical, she wrote a couple good songs for getting over that sort of thing.
