We were afraid of this, and it looks like our fears have been realized—despite the official protest we filed last week, not only has the fourth week Maroon 5 spent at #1 with “One More Night” been upheld, but now it’s there for a fifth week as well. Radio just really loves them some M5—it’s the #1 radio song in the country for the second straight week, with its plays only increasing in number—while Psy’s “Gangnam Style” has yet to really take hold there, as its digital sales and on-demand streams have begun to slip. The song is now the longest-reigning #1 of Adam Levine and co.’s career, eclipsing the four weeks of “Makes Me Wonder” and three of “Wake Up Call.”
Will Psy even get to #1 at this point? It’s looking more unlikely with each successive week, especially as Maroon 5′s numbers stay constant. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift remains an ever-present threat to take over should M5 slip—her “I Knew You Were Trouble” bows at #3 this week, thanks to an incredible 400k-plus in sales, and her exemplary “State of Grace” should battle for a similar peek next week—while a couple artists that are no stranger to #1, Ke$ha (“Die Young” moves from #14-8) and Rihanna (“Diamonds” goes #18-11) are sneaking up from behind. Next week might be the last shot that the fading “Style” phenomenon gets at the Hot 100′s top spot.
Will the world be deprived a chance to see Psy shirtless, as he’s promised if his song gets to #1? Well actually, he’s done it before anyway, so whatever. Still like to see it get there, though.
