Whatever happened to country music style? What used to be the domain of massive hairdos, overly spangly dresses, ten-gallon hats, bad denim and cowboy boots has become downright sleek and sexy. Okay, so the crowd hasn’t totally ditched the hats and boots (and Jason Aldean, those patched and ripped jeans were questionable), but we were hard-pressed to find anything too wacky at Thursday’s CMAs. The top trends of the night were long-sleeved dresses, sheer overlays, leather and a bit of sparkle.
1. LONG SLEEVES
It’s not that cold in Nashville—dresses with sleeves are a big look for fall. The style was embraced by ladies both young (Kelly Clarkson) and less-young (Priscilla Presley); host Carrie Underwood sported two sleeved dresses, one long and one short.
2. LEATHER
Leather’s always been big among musicians, but last night polished leather dresses were worn by the members of Little Big Town while performers Faith Hill and Miranda Lambert both rocked tight black leather pants.
3. SHEER OVERLAYS
Taylor Swift loved this look, donning two dresses with sheer outer layers (in the singer’s favorite shade, red). Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride also wore pretty, pastel versions.
4. METALLIC SPARKLE
Except for a few spots of red and blue, color was out on the red carpet last night, replaced by shimmery, sparkly metallics. Carrie Underwood, in her first outfit of many, wore a beautiful white gown with gold accents while Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town went head-to-toe in gleamy columns.
